Apple Crumble Recipe

Ingredients
  • Apple Filling
  • 6 cups cooking apple (about 5 large Fuji, Mutsu, Cortland or Spy) (photo 1)
  • ⅓ cups brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • Crumble
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¾ cup quick cooking rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup melted butter
  • pinch salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
Instructions
  1. preheat the oven to 350F
  2. generously butter the bottom and sides of large casserole dish (I used a soufflé dish)
  3. peel and chop the apples into uniform slices or chunks (photo 2, 3 and 4)
  4. combine the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt
  5. add the brown sugar mixture to the apples in a large bowl and mix until the apples are coated (photo 5)
  6. add the apples to the buttered dish
  7. to make the crumble, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, melted butter, salt and cinnamon (photo 6 and 7)
  8. sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples (don’t press down on the crumble; leave it loose and, well, crumbly!) (photo 8)
  9. place on casserole dish on the middle rack of the oven
  10. bake 45 to 60 minutes, or until the crumble is nicely golden brown and bubbly (photo 9)
  11. serve warm with ice cream (photo 10)
  12. serves my family of 5, including second helpings
